Wed Oct 20, 7pm Location TBA, Screening of Katanga Business ( Synopsis: After Mobutu, King of Zaire and Congo River, the Belgian director Thierry Michel pursues his exploration of Central Africa. His new documentary, entitled Katanga Business, is a kind of political economic thriller, which takes place in this south-eastern province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, one of the world’s richest regions in mining resources. While the inhabitants of Katanga continue to live in extreme poverty, multinationals are rivalled by China, newly arrived with its billions of dollars. Staged on economic war, Katanga Business is a tale of globalisation)

Thursday Oct 21, 7pm Location TBA, The role of the mining companies in the eastern Congo war and of Canada as haven of the world mining industry. (Alain Deneault is a philosopher and professor of sociology at the University of Quebec at Montreal. He is the author of several books including Noir Canada, which exposes widespread human rights abuses, economic crimes and political tentacles of private companies operating in Africa. Professor Deneault will focus his presentation on multinationals in the DRC. He will discuss how multinationals are guilty of corruption, institutionalized looting of mineral resources, and how they have exacerbated instability and armed conflicts for easy profits.)

The Invisible Conflicts Back-To-School Benefit Show is TOMORROW NIGHT,

And contribute to the continuation of the educational pursuits of twenty incredible children affected by war in Northern Uganda. The kids of The Dwan Madiki Partnership in Uganga are currently enrolled in the best schools in Northern Uganda because of your donations and your continued support. We couldn't do this without you!

Heartland Cafe is also home to the best fair-trade food in Rogers Park, so join us for a drink, some great food, and great music before the upcoming school year puts an end to summer fun.

The 3rd annual IC Benefit Show is here! Join us this Friday, February 5th at The Beat Kitchen to support the kids of the Dwan Madiki Partnership in Uganda, and to hear some awesome bands, including:

Doors are at 8:30, and the show starts at 9PM. Tickets are $10 and the show is 17 & up. Buy your tickets at the door, or HERE.

Why Didn't You Hear About Haiti...?

INVISIBLE CONFLICTS PRESENTS: 

Speakers Forum on the Past, Present and Future of Haiti

Why didn't you hear about Haiti before January 12th? Come join us on Monday, February 1st in Finnegan Auditorium at 8PM to find out why the situation in Haiti is an invisible conflict. 

Speakers include:

Dr. John Dongohue, a history professor at Loyola University. Dr. Dongohue will be speaking about Haiti in a historical context, and will explain why the nation was nearly destroyed by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake - the same magnitude quake which only killed 63 people in San Francisco in 1989. 

Dr. Goheen is a film professor at Loyola, and was recently in Haiti. He will be speaking of his experience in the country and describing its modern day situation.
